Mary Anne Mitchell has been working as a photographer in Atlanta, GA for the past 20 years. In addition to commercial work for corporate and advertising clients, she has continually photographed diverse landscape and culture in her extensive travels. These include the recent series of images from the South Carolina Lowcountry, as well as scenes from the West Coast of the U.S., Hawaii, Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Portugal.
The technique of the current work involves using a film sensitive to all light, including infrared, and manipulating it to achieve the grainy ethereal quality. THe prints are then sepia toned.
This series suggests the human element through its absence; in abandoned ruins, ornate fences, empty doorways, gardens, and deserted shorelines. These lush, often untamed, scenes of nature capture the mystycal qualities so specific to the Carolina Lowcountry.
