An artist’s reception will be held at the gallery Friday, October 7th from 5-8 pm. Earl B. Lewis created the lotto icon series from countless trips to convenience stores, where the artist observed adults purchasing scratch-off lottery tickets that have the winning (or losing) numbers concealed on the game card. Lewis’s personal observations and findings were striking, disproportionate balances of irony and equity. Participants were mostly indigenous adults, but the subject of his focus is the secondary victim of impoverished adults; and therefore, Lewis cultivated a keen perspective on how gambling affects children. Thus, Lewis sparked the revelation of “lotto icon” portraits, with an image of a child revealing his face through the scratched gold leaf. His artistic approach was to purchase a scratch-off lottery ticket, paint a portrait and apply a layer of gold leaf, then scratch the remnants away to reveal an intricate portrait of a child.

With 32 years of experience in teaching illustration, Lewis couldn’t help but immerse himself into the lottery project, saying, “My work really is about valuing children as our most precious commodity.” The gallery has had success in his icons, but this show will expand Lewis’s venture on a global perspective; he has collected tickets from Portugal, France, Italy, and Israel. Inspired by medieval themes, religious icons, and Byzantine works, an expected 25 to 30 new icons will vary in a range of sizes, including diptychs and triptychs, and variety of panels, boards, and doors.
